The Central Wisconsin Agriculture Specialization Team is sponsoring dairy meetings throughout Central Wisconsin. The dates and locations for meetings are: Feb. 21 at the Elroy American Legion Hall, 402 E Franklin Street; Feb. 29 at the Junction City Community Hall (Highway 10, Fire Station) and March 6 at the Plover Elizabeth Inn, 5246 Harding Avenue (Hwy. 54 and I39 Interchange). The program runs from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Topics include: Dairy Marketing 101; Maximizing Cow Comfort; Cull Cows or Cull Heifers? and TMR Management Practices.

Kim's Floral and Gifts recently expanded to provide classy clothes for men in addition to being a full-service florist. The shop in Mauston now offers rental tuxedos, accessories and corsages to men of all ages.

"We offer tuxes for proms for the schools in the area," owner Kim Murphy said. "We will go right into the school, have them [teenaged boys] measured, order their tuxes and a corsage if they wish and they return the tux back to the school." She said she or coworker Sharon Monzer will pick up the rentals on the Monday after prom.

Historical Society Christmas Open House

The Juneau County Historical Society will hold it's Annual Christmas Open House from 1PM to 8PM November 26th and 27th and December 3rd and 4th at the Boorman House in Mauston. There will be a raffle, and food and drink will be available. This is a free event, but donations are accepted.

The 12th Annual Touchstone Energy Waterfest Venetian Lights Boat Parade will be Saturday August 6th 8PM starting from the Dirty Turtle in New Lisbon. All terrain vehicle users will soon have limited legal access to the city of Mauston.

The City Council approved a short ATV route on Mauston's east side May 24.

And while the designated route is tiny - only a mile or so long - it's importance to ATV fans is large.

That's because the city route will connect the town of Lemonweir, whose roads are already legal for ATV use, with Mauston.

Civilian employees played a pivotal role at Fort McCoy during World War II by performing administrative duties. To highlight this contribution, a period display is being designed in building 843, the administrative facility in the Commemorative Area. Currently the building contains desks, cabinets and chairs from that era, but other office-type items are needed. Of particular need are civilian clothes from that period. Another Book on Juneau County History

A volunteer from the Juneau County Historical Society, who wrote many articles for the Juneau County Star-Times on Juneau County's Sesquicentennial in 2007, has now put those stories and more into a new book.

Many people serve on missions by performing charitable deeds or travelling overseas. Rose Clark of Mauston has taken on a mission of her own to link Juneau County's present to its past by way of publishing a new book.

Clark, volunteer historian of the Juneau County Historical Society, said, "The 52 articles I wrote for the Juneau County Star-Times for the county's sesquicentennial in 2007 were the springboard for the book.

Ross Curry, 81, of Wisconsin Dells, recently released "Hidden History of the Wisconsin Dells Area."

From Blackhawk Island to Baraboo and Lone Rock to Lyndon town, Curry depicts first settlers, pioneers, Juneau County moonshiners, notorious characters and military veterans throughout Central Wisconsin.

He links descendants with their forbearers through investigation, research and oral history from 150 years ago.

Discovery of Town of Finley History

Sixty years ago, retired Washington state prison official Bob Freeman found a small leather trunk in a home he bought in Walla Walla, Wash.
About 19 inches long, 11 inches wide, and 11 inches in height, the trunk bore the inscription: "CARLTON H. FINLEY PITTSVILLE, WIS. / CRUSADE COMDY. 17.K.T./ Stevens Point. Wis."
Impressed by the quality of the little trunk, Freeman gave it to an inmate at the Washington State Penitentiary where he worked to see whether the man could work the leather back to its original state.
"He had it in his cell for some six months bringing it back to reality," Freeman, 86, recalls.
About two weeks ago, Freeman contacted the Stevens Point Journal hoping to find out who Carlton H. Finley was.

Heroism for some just seems to be all in the line of duty. At least that is the attitude of Derrick T. Sailer, Staff Sergeant E6, United States Army, 101st Airborne Division Screaming Eagles.

According to the Wisconsin Army National Guard, on April 28, during his third overseas combat tour, Sailer was awarded the Combat Action Badge and an Army Commendation Medal for heroic actions in the face of the enemy.

Ancient Effigy Mounds

Indian Mounds Park is the site of several effigy mounds including a rare flex-legged running panther, a linear mound and several round or oval burial mounds. These mounds were created by the Woodland Culture people, ancestors of the Ho-Chunk, who lived throughout this area from 499 BC to approx 1500 AD. Indian Mounds Park is located on Indian Mound Road, south of New Lisbon, off Highways 12 and 16 and is maintained by the New Lisbon Lions Club. The Effigy Mounds are listed on the National Register of Historical Places.

Kurtis Hodges was driving west on Highway 21 in Juneau County between Necedah and Shennington shortly before midnight when he spotted a disabled semi truck.

Since his step-father, Mike Smith, owns Mike’s 24-Hour Mobile Repair towing service, Hodges naturally pulled over.

“He told me, ‘I think I just hit a bear,’” Hodges said. “You don’t hear that kind of thing around here.”

From the Juneau County Star Times: Twenty-nine of 31 Juneau County residents who voted endorsed a plan to allow gun deer hunting in a part of Buckhorn State Park, according to ballot totals from the state Department of Natural Resources.
The question was one of 96 voted on at simultaneous sessions of the 2010 DNR's Spring Fish and Wildlife Rule Hearing and annual Wisconsin Conservation Congress Meeting in each of Wisconsin's 72 counties April 12.

Whooping Cranes in Necedah Wildlife Refuge

NECEDAH — Nine young whooping cranes were released Saturday on the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge.
The cranes are part of the Direct Autumn Release project conducted by the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership, according to a news release from the organization. The partnership is an international coalition of public and private groups that is reintroducing whooping cranes into North America. Full Story from Wis Rapids Tribune

Wisconsin - Florida Crane Migration
20 Cranes are being escorted by ultralight planes with white-suited pilots and a ground crew. This journey of 1,285 miles can take up to 90 days.

MADISON – An online color map [PDF] that compares estimated deer populations to population goals offers a view into how population estimates are used to determine season structures.

The color-coded map of Wisconsin’s deer management units (DMUs) assigns a color to a deer management unit in one of four categories according to population estimates: more than 20 percent below population goals; within 20 percent plus or minus of population goals; 20 to 40 percent above goals; and more than 40 percent above goals.

Populations determine structure.

Meadow Valley Wildlife Area

Wonderful place to enjoy nature just north of the Juneau County line in Wood County.

Meadow Valley Wildlife Area is a 58,000 acre property. It is located in Central Wisconsin between Necedah and Babcock, about two hours driving time north from Madison. It is 25 miles southwest of Wisconsin Rapids and 20 miles north of Mauston. Or, one mile west of Babcock on Highway X.

Buckhorn State Park - The park and wildlife areas are open for the early bow deer season and deer can be registered at the park office. Waterfowl, small game hunting and trapping are allowed in the Yellow River and Buckhorn Wildlife Areas only. Fall turkey hunting is allowed in the Yellow River Wildlife Area and is not allowed in the new park land for fall. New maps are available at the park office that show the parkland that was acquired last fall which is now state park land and has the hunting rules on them. An accessible deer hunting blind and two accessible waterfowl blinds can be reserved by persons with disabilities. If not reserved, they are first come, first served. The accessible fishing pier is located by the north shelter. Canoes and kayaks are available for renting at the park and many visitors have been enjoying them. We have an adapted kayak for use by people with disabilities. People have been hiking all over the park and taking pictures for the photo contest. GPS units are available to check out as well as a binder of geocaches at Buckhorn and Roche-A-Cri. Some campsites will remain open for the weekend and are non-reservable. Check with the park office on availability. Sites 8,9, 16 and sites in the group camp, A1-A4, A6-A8 and B1-B3 are reservable through Oct 12.
